Google Fiber-Optic Pilot Program

What’s all this about?

Google is looking for places around the country to test its ultra-fast broadband internet.  This networks will deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today via a 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connection. They say their service will be offered at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people.

From now until March 26th, Google is accepting submittals for its Request for information (RFI), which will help them decide where to put the test network. They are also asking community members to chime in and nominate their areas. Fill out a nomination form, talk to your neighborhood organizations, write letters to the editor, tell your friends, put it on twitter, call in to the radio stations… Let’s not allow this opportunity to pass without giving our fullest effort!

Mainline I-96

  • Work is currently scheduled to start the week of March 8th, weather permitting.
  • At this time night time double lane closures on Westbound I-96 will be used to place traffic control which will shift Westbound I-96 traffic to the outside shoulder and outer most lane.Â
    • The 3 lane sections will be reduced to a 2 lane section.
    • Concrete barrier wall, will then be placed to allow Eastbound traffic to be crossed over onto the Westbound inside shoulder and inside lane.
    • There will be 2 lanes in Eastbound and Westbound directions on I-96 once traffic control is fully implemented, and work will progress during the day time hours.
  • Once Eastbound traffic is shifted to the Westbound lanes, Eastbound traffic will have access to all open ramps via the use of crossovers that were constructed in the fall of 2009.
  • This traffic configuration is expected to be in place until approximately the middle of July.

M-43 Ramps

  • During the first stage of construction, all ramp movements will be maintained using the existing ramps as well as the temporary ramps constructed in the fall of 2009.
  • Entrance ramps to I-96 will be under a yield condition during the night time lane closures.
  • Temporary signals will be placed at the temporary ramps to facilitate the traffic movements required.
  • Alternate ramp access for this stage of construction are as follows:
    • The ramp from M-43 Eastbound to I-96 Westbound will use the ramp from M-43 Westbound to I-96 Westbound.
    • The ramp from I-96 Eastbound to M-43 Eastbound will use the ramp from I-96 Eastbound to M-43 Westbound.
    • The ramp from I-96 Westbound to M-43 Westbound will use the ramp from I-96 Westbound to M-43 Eastbound.

Grand River Ave Ramps

  • All ramp movements for the Westbound I-96 traffic will be maintained in this stage of Construction.
  • Entrance ramps to I-96 will be under a yield condition during the night time lane closures.
  • During this stage of Construction the ramps for Eastbound I-96 exiting at Grand River as well as the entrance ramp to Eastbound I-96 will be detoured for 18 calendar days each.Â
    • Only one ramp closure will be allowed at a time.
    • There will be further notifications 10 calendar days prior to these detours being established.
    • Detour routes for these ramps will utilize  the M-100/Wright Rd exit and Grand River Ave.

I-69 Ramps

  • Access will be maintained at all times to all ramps in this stage of construction.
  • Work will be starting on March 8th on the bridge ramp from Westbound I-69 to Eastbound I-96.  This two lane ramp will have a single lane closure with a traffic shift.
  • Ramps from I-69 to I-96 will be under a yield condition during the night time lane closures.

M-43 Canal to Marketplace

  • M-43 will be reconstructed from Canal to Marketplace with all work scheduled to take place in 2011.
  • You may experience minimal intermittent night time shoulder and lane closures on M-43 for bridge work at the I-96 interchange during the 2010 construction season.

Construction schedules are subject to change, based on contractor’s decisions and weather. MDOT will let you know of any major changes or updates through this e-mail alert feature.
