Beginning in April 2020, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is investing approximately $60 million to improve I-496 between I-96 and Lansing Road. Work will include reconstructing the freeway and ramps, preventive maintenance on all the bridges in the project area and making operational improvements to the entrance and exit ramps at the I-96, Creyts Road, and Waverly Road interchanges.
How Will Traffic Be Affected?
Work will be done one direction at a time, with eastbound I-496 closed for construction first. Eastbound traffic will be detoured along Lansing Road from I-96 to I-496. Bridgework will require short-term closures and detours of local roads. Alternate routes are advised. Work is expected to run from April through November 2020.
Waverly Road Improvements
Additionally, MDOT is also partnering with the Ingham County Road Department, Delta Township and Lansing Township to reconstruct Waverly Road between Lansing Road and St. Joseph Highway including the construction of a new pedestrian pathway along Waverly Rd. Work on these improvements may stretch into 2021 for completion. MDOT will provide updates through social media and the project website.
