From time to time, Delta
Township experiences various severe weather occurrences. Two tornadoes
have hit the Township in the past 33 years. The Township has placed
13 Public Warning Sirens throughout the Township to notify citizens
in case of severe
weather
or other disasters. These sirens are tested the first Saturday of
each month at 1:00 pm. During severe weather, when a tornado
is spotted on the ground in Eaton County, or approaching from a neighboring
county, the sirens are activated when the possibility of eminent danger
exists. Citizens are urged to take cover when the sirens have been
activated.
Occasionally, heavy rains
have caused flooding in low-lying areas, especially along the Grand
River. During the past 20 years, many corrective measures have occurred.
County drains have been enlarged and the Township has required developers
to create many flood retention ponds and basins. Currently, a major
flood plain project costing more than $46 million is underway. This
project, consisting of four earthen dams, the widening of Carrier
Creek and other tributaries will culminate in a 100-500 year flood
plain district.
