Delta Township Clocktower

An article appeared in the Lansing State Journal on November 8, 2004, concerning the proposed clock tower project in Delta Township. Still in the planning process, the clock tower would be located somewhere in the Delta Township office complex at Saginaw Highway and Canal Road. The tower would be tall enough to be seen from a distance, and the mechanism would be housed in glass so its motion could be viewed. Informational displays would surround the base of the tower as would a small garden with viewing benches. Township officials have asked for bids on the project design to better their idea of what it might cost. This will also help in the planning and funding effort.

What do you think about having a clock tower to Delta Township?

Will it keep time? Who will be responsible for continual maintenance?

I think it would be an amazing sight and a great thing to have, but would the cost be exorbitant and is this the best use of the money? I hope it works out--I'd love to have something like that in my community.

Meridan has a clock, so we have to get one too? Don't we have anything more useful to spend money on?

We do not need another clock! We have watches and clocks in our cars. This a stupid idea and will be a big waste of money.

A century ago public clocks had merit.

A clock tower is an AMAZING idea. I know, as I am a high schooler and hear a lot how a lot of us feel like we live in the middle of nowhere. A clocktower would at least be something that could ground our "town". As for people who say we don't need a clock for this reason or that, have pride in your community. It is about practicality, it's about caing for where you live.

I think anything to make Delta Township a more attractive place is always a good idea.

Let's spend the money on sidewalks. Most of us wear a watch!

Forget the clock tower! It’s a BIG waste of money for now.

Let’s get that new library moving!! We want a new library!!!

If we don’t have the money to build a new library that we need, then why are we thinking about spending money on a clock tower?

Here is an idea “SAVE”!

Save till we have the money to build something that we need…

Like:
A NEW LIBRARY!!!!!

What about using the money instead, to hire more firefighters to actually staff all of the apparatus that the township has at all times.

Anything that is a sign of an actual community there and not just a harsh land of mini-malls would be great. How about making this a starting point for making Saginaw a safe walkable/bike-able street? It's almost impossible to ride one's bike to the ice cream parlor. We tried it from just east of Delta twnshp. border and gave up - it was like taking your life in your hands.

Pave Eaton Highway instead.

"Meridan [sic] has a clock, so we have to get one too?"

Do some research. Meridian Twp.'s tower has cellular antennas embedded in it. What would you rather look at, a clock tower, or a 200' gray steel porcupine quill? Our fire dept. and the sheriff dept. station (not to mention all the other governmental entities) could also use it to improve communications.

The Meridian tower is a moneymaker. Cellular providers rent tower space, and no doubt are paying the township back for its investment.

Oh, yeah. A road shared with Clinton County. You think they'll pony up for their half? Heck, over 90% of Capitol City Airport is IN CLINTON COUNTY, but they aren't paying a penny into the Airport Authority.

Sorry about your road dust problem...blame it on St. Johns, I guess?

People have watches, cell phones with accurate time -- don't think we need to waste "our tax dollars" on a watch tower! In addition, people need to have their eyes on the road as traffic on Saginaw Hwy. along the business section is a nightmare.......

I have several watches. Even have one on my cell phone and in my vehicles. This is a very old, old, old idea. Sorta like the horse and buggy. If all funding is private donation including the land upon which it is to be placed, fine. But if one penny of public funding is spent, it's a terrible waste. This idea's "time" is long past. You great thinkers should use a sundial.

When I drive through Delta township, and see the beatiful new and very functional Fire Station, Township Hall Addition, Police Substation, Community Center, and Parks, I don't have an Indentity Crisis, these things do it for me. When spending the tax payers money, keep it on tangible things, and you won't have to waste your time, reading comment after comment, trying to convince yourself it's OK to spend money on something that really doesn't benefit the vast population of Delta Township or those that pass through it.

I think we waste too much taxpayers money, and we don't need more fire personel.

Although a clock tower would look nice I really don't feel it would be that usefull. I would much prefer to see the new library, and if you felt we really needed a clock tower, put it in front of the library. The Library we have now is almost criminal for the population we have.

I don't mind the clock tower so much, but what is an informational display? I don't think many people are going to drive into the parking lot, get out of their car and wander over to the clock tower to sit and gaze at it and read what's going on in the township. Benches sound like a dumb idea to me. Kind of like the benches on Cedar Street in Lansing. Total waste of money. It will be interesting to see how the township listens to the comments it receives.

Did any of you read the post about how Meridians clock is a moneymaker? I did some research and while no numbers are readily avaliblem, the tower is leased by 4 cell companies, which gets them quite a bit of money, the clocktower itself was, I beleive built and paid for by a develper and it looks good, what more do you need. Delta's only obligation is to let them build the thing.

Surely you could put the money to better use than a clock tower! Infrastructure improvements are much better for the community than another clock. Do you really think people will look up in the air while driving (a safety hazard at that) to get the time?

Waste of Money............donate the money to a local food bank or heating assistant agency. There are people in need in this township just as any township. Make real use of peoples money. Yeah would look nice and pretty but in all honesty there is much better use for money than a big ben at canal and saginaw. If you collect private donations then it might be different although I think those donating could donate to a more worth while cause as well.

Or take that money and hire some sidewalk snow removal police as Delta Townsip doesn't really seem to care if thier sidewalks have snow cleared or not less you go in and make a formal complaint. They write articles every year about in the Delta mag but that is about as far as they get......then they realize the office is out of coffee and donuts.
