Currently, the Delta Township population is 29,682 and accounts for almost 30% of Eaton County's population. Delta offers the best of all worlds to both residents and businesses as it is a central location with easily accessible inter-states, beautiful neighborhoods, shopping areas that provide for a wide range of products, a small town atmosphere that incorporates many services to its residents and businesses and proximity to Michigan State University, Lansing Community College, Cooley Law School and Davenport College of Business.
In 1837, when the local population reached 18, a United States Post Office was established in what was then called Grand River City. The township was organized in 1842 and at its first township meeting citizens chose the name of Delta. By 1887, the area was mainly supported by farming, gristmills, and sawmills. The clapboard township hall was erected in the mid 1870's and served the township until 1955.
Delta Township became an incorporated charter township on August 7, 1962. It has an elected local government that consists of a seven member Township Board . The seven members are Township Supervisor, Township Treasurer, Township Clerk and four Township Trustees. Each of these positions hold elected terms of four years.
